- Tap
Next. - In the User information screen, type your name as you want it to appear in your mail, followed by your full e-mail address and password. Choose whether you want the software to remember your password, and then tap
Next. - From the “Account type” drop-down menu, choose
IMAP4rather than the defaultPOP3. You may also want to change the name of this account so it displays something other than “IMAP4″. TapNext. - Beside “Incoming mail”, enter the name of your email server: To access your GMail or Google Apps mail, enter
imap.gmail.comand selectRequire SSL Connection. For “Outgoing mail”, entersmtp.gmail.comand selectRequire SSL Connectionand then tap Next. - If you’re on an unlimited data plan like I am, I recommend selecting
Last 7 daysandFirst 5000 bytes. This refers to the amount of mail synchronized to your device. - Again, if you’re on an unlimited data plan, I recommend that you set your device to Connect automatically and check for messages
Every fifteen minutes.Honestly, I wish you could set it to check more frequently than that. - Tap Finish and you’re done.
If you have service on your device, you may retrieve mail by tapping the send/receive icon at the bottom of the screen or choosing Menu -> Send/Receive. If you have set your device to check automatically, you do not have to manually retrieve mail.
The first mail retrieval will take a few minutes because it will be downloading your folders, as well as mail, for as far back as you’ve set it.
