How To Configure a WM5 Device for Google Apps IMAP E-Mail

To configure an IMAP connection to Google Apps on your Windows Mobile 5 device, follow the steps below:

  1. Tap Start, and from the resulting drop-down menu, tap Messaging.
  2. On the bottom right, tap Menu, and then choose Options and select New Account.
  3. Enter your name and email addresses in the box provided. Uncheck the box underneath Automatic Setup.
  4. Tap Next.
  5. In the User information screen, type your name as you want it to appear in your mail, followed by your full e-mail address and password. Choose whether you want the software to remember your password, and then tap Next.
  6. From the “Account type” drop-down menu, choose IMAP4 rather than the default POP3. You may also want to change the name of this account so it displays something other than “IMAP4″. Tap Next.
  7. Beside “Incoming mail”, enter the name of your email server: To access your GMail or Google Apps mail, enter imap.gmail.com and select Require SSL Connection. For “Outgoing mail”, enter smtp.gmail.com and select Require SSL Connection and then tap Next.
  8. If you’re on an unlimited data plan like I am, I recommend selecting Last 7 days and First 5000 bytes. This refers to the amount of mail synchronized to your device.
  9. Again, if you’re on an unlimited data plan, I recommend that you set your device to Connect automatically and check for messages Every fifteen minutes. Honestly,  I wish you could set it to check more frequently than that.
  10. Tap Finish and you’re done.

If you have service on your device, you may retrieve mail by tapping the send/receive icon at the bottom of the screen or choosing Menu -> Send/Receive. If you have set your device to check automatically, you do not have to manually retrieve mail.

The first mail retrieval will take a few minutes because it will be downloading your folders, as well as mail, for as far back as you’ve set it.
